Reminder - Traffic Control at Þingvellir summer 2023
This spring, Þingvellir national park started stearing the parking lot that leads to the visitor center at Hakid, P1. A better distinction was made between vehicles that take more than 20 passengers, smaller group vehicles, less than 20, and then general vehicles.
Signs were put up and an employee is at site for instruction during the rush hour. This is fundamentally a collaborative project to ensure better traffic flow and safety.
In general, this has gone very well and the majority of drivers, guides and other guests are satisfied with the arrangement. However, in recent weeks some guides and drivers on smaller cars have drifted a bit from the general plan with the result of traffic jam and less security.
The idea to have the parking lot nearest our Visitor center for vehicles were the driver is still on site is so he can move the car when needed and doing so clearing the parking lot.
Here is a confirmation of the plan that is valid until September 15 during the peak relief period.
Here is an overview of the general plan for the parking lot.
Here it is easy to see how the traffic control is thought out. Busses with drivers in the car and the size of 20+ can park in the black circle. The busses with fewer then 20 park in the purple and the general traffic in the red.
