Þingvellir in the Arts
Þingvellir has been captured by both Icelandic and foreign visitors in many ways through the years.
Formal publication of Þingvellir in arts happened today. The process started formally when Alþingi decided on special celebration meeting held at Þingvellir, July 17 2018, to give out book about Þingvellir in the arts. Alþingi and Hið íslenska bókmenntafélag (Icelandic Literature Assocation, established 1816) made formal cooperation agreement on working together on the project.
The book contains a detailed overview of Icelandic art related to Þingvellir and its development through the ravages of time. A lot of work was done collecting, cataloging and photographing works of art. In the book you can find pictures of 269 works by 104 artists.
Throughout history, Þingvellir has been a subject of interest for Icelandic as well as foreign artists. The imposing walls of Almannagjá, the prominent Ármannsfell and the characteristic Hrafnabjörg have become many an inspiration. At the same time, the rich history of Þingvellir has also called upon people to create their own image of Þingvellir. The art book can certainly be obtained in all better bookstores and at the Icelandic Literature Association. Do notice though it is only in Icelandic though images in the book cross boundaries of language.
