Presidents at Þingvellir

Thingvellir has been for long time an important site for official visits by state dignitaries.  Last Friday Thingvellir national park was visited by four presidents in one visit. The three president of the Baltic states, Egils Levits, president of Latvia,  Gitanas Nausėda, president of Lithuania and Alar Karis, president of Estonia  and Guðni Th. Jóhannesson president of Iceland visited Thingvellir and enjoyed the spectualar scenery and learned about the history of the site.

Exploring Þingvellir

Clear and bright skies gave the official visitors a good view over the old assembly site.

Einar Á. E. Sæmundsen director of Þingvellir national park greeted them at Þingvellir and guided the guests and spouses through the site from the visitor centre to Lögberg

Almannagjá

Presidents of the Baltic countries, Iceland along with director of Þingvellir national park walked down Almannagjá fault.

At Lögberg Mr. Guðni Th. Jóhannesson president of Iceland and former professor of history at the University of Iceland  talked about the old assembly and also recited the poem Ísland farsælda frón written by Jónas Hallgrímsson and emphasised the close ties of the four nations.   

The weather was sunny with a lot of wind that had all flags waving and cheering the guests.
