Floods in River Öxará
20.11.2024
Closed area marked red
Due to slushy floods pedastrian bridges have been closed.
Pedastrian bridges over river Öxará are now closed due to slush floods in the river. The river continues to push up ice that has formed over the past few cold days. A strong northerly wind then pushes the ice over the riverbanks onto land and over the pahtway.
River Öxará also appears to have started to run in an older channel along the slope near Lögberg and dug a small ditch between the ice sheets. The ice can vary in thickness and water flows underneath.
As a result, the bridges are impassable due to ice and the cold water running underneath.
View over the ice covered ground
It is not recommended to even try to cross the ice towards the bridges has it is sometimes quite thin and river running underneath.

Old river channel
River Öxará seems to have found it´s old channel and is now much more near the slope of Lögberg and makes it impassable to even get to the bridges.
