The northern lights are caused by charged particles in  solarwinds coming from the Sun, Most of the particles are repelled by the Earth's magnetic field, except at the north and south magnetic poles where some of them are able to get past the field. When they collide with the atmosphere, energy is released in the form of light. The colors are the product of substances such as oxygen and nitrogen.
