Traffic crossing the bridge will be monitored and controlled.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, December 10, core drilling will begin on the bridge near Drekkingarhylur. This is part of a assessment of the concrete strength of the bridge. The process will be conducted by COWI and a contractor on behalf of Þingvellir National Park. Six core drilling samples will be taken, both from the bridge deck and then the piers.
Construction work will begin at around 10:00 and is expected to last until 16:00. It will be necessary to control pedestrian traffic crossing the bridge. For a short time heavy machines will be operating in the work area, resulting in we will have to close the path entirely for a limited time.
We hope that this will cause as little disruption as possible.
The bridge in present condition but it is now 80 years old.

First bridge was constructed there 1897, the first one was a simple bridge made out of wood.
Baldur Þór Þorvaldsson engineer took this photo 2012 under the current bridge. Close to the centre we can see oldest part from 1912 and then to the sides how it was widened 1944.
