Wastewater and sewage treatment

A seminar was held last Friday on alternative techinques and methods of treating sewage and wastewater in the Lake Thingvallavatn watershed.  The seminar was organised by the Water and Wastewater Association of Iceland (VAFRÍ) in cooperation with Thingvellir national park, Reykjavik Energy, University of Iceland, The Environmental Agency, Icelandic Tourism Board and by Samorka – Icelandic Energy and Utilities.

One of the key characteristics of lake Thingvallavatn is that it is nitrogen deficient and therefor has retained it´s blue color and little algea growth has been noticed until recent years.  An increased nitrogen load to Lake Þingvallavatn will increase  phytoplankton growth which is a threat to the lake.  Increasing tourism and number summerhouses around the lake has been the cause of concern for it´s long term effect on the lake.

The keynote speaker at the seminar was professor Petter Deinboll Jenssen from the Department of Environmental Sciences, at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences in Aas in Norway. He introduced different techniques of treating waste water and sewage with the aim of reducing it´s impact on the environment.  An survey done by students  from the University of Iceland on the different methods of dealing with septic was introduced as well as an introduction to the nitrogen budget of Lake Thingvallavatn.

This seminar provided a very valuable information on how to treat wastewater and sewage around the lake.
